An Eastern astrology chart is usually a BaZi chart, a grid of four “pillars” worked out from the year, month, day and hour you were born. The name BaZi means “eight characters”, because each pillar is written with two. Practitioners read the chart for the balance of five elements and the interplay of yin and yang. This guide explains how the chart is laid out, what each part is said to stand for and why the hour of birth matters, then shows how the Eastern Astrology Language Reading gives you a personal Eastern chart to explore, starting with a free quiz.

Each pillar is a pair of symbols stacked one above the other. The top symbol is a Heavenly Stem, one of ten. Each stem is an element with a yin or yang quality: yang Wood, yin Wood, yang Fire, yin Fire, and so on through Earth, Metal and Water. The bottom symbol is an Earthly Branch, one of twelve, and the twelve branches are the zodiac animals you may already know. Each branch also has an element of its own: Rat and Pig are Water, Tiger and Rabbit are Wood, Snake and Horse are Fire, Monkey and Rooster are Metal, and Ox, Dragon, Goat and Dog are Earth.
Four pillars of two symbols each give the eight characters. In the usual layout the chart is a small grid:
| Hour pillar | Day pillar | Month pillar | Year pillar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top symbol | Stem | Stem | Stem | Stem |
| Bottom symbol | Branch | Branch | Branch | Branch |
| Commonly linked with | Children, later years | The self and a close partner | Parents, work | Ancestors, early life |
Layouts differ a little between sources, and some write the year pillar on the left, so check which order a chart uses before you read it. The “commonly linked with” row is the traditional framing, and a lovely way to see how the tradition maps a life onto a chart.
The day stem, the self
Of the eight characters, the stem of the day pillar gets special attention. Practitioners call it the Day Master and treat it as the centre of the chart, the part that stands for you. The other seven characters are read in relation to it, for example as supporting or opposing elements. When someone says they are “a Fire person” or “a Water person” in this tradition, they usually mean their Day Master.
The five elements and how they interact
The elements are not meant to be literal substances. They are labels for kinds of change, and they relate to each other in two traditional cycles:
- The generating cycle. Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth (as ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood.
- The controlling cycle. Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.
A practitioner counts the elements across all eight characters and looks at which are strong, weak or missing. Many then talk about which elements are “favorable” for balance, and about ten-year spans called luck cycles that move through a person’s life. It is a rich symbolic language, and part of the pleasure is seeing how the pieces fit together.
If you would like the animals behind the branches first, our guide to the 12 Chinese zodiac animals lists them with the traits tradition gives each one.
Why the hour of birth matters
The hour pillar is the finishing touch of a traditional chart. The traditional day is divided into twelve periods of two hours, each tied to one animal branch. The Rat hour runs from 11 pm to 1 am, the Ox hour from 1 to 3 am, and so on around the clock:
| Branch | Hours |
|---|---|
| Rat | 11 pm to 1 am |
| Ox | 1 am to 3 am |
| Tiger | 3 am to 5 am |
| Rabbit | 5 am to 7 am |
| Dragon | 7 am to 9 am |
| Snake | 9 am to 11 am |
| Horse | 11 am to 1 pm |
| Goat | 1 pm to 3 pm |
| Monkey | 3 pm to 5 pm |
| Rooster | 5 pm to 7 pm |
| Dog | 7 pm to 9 pm |
| Pig | 9 pm to 11 pm |
Two people born on the same date but at different hours get different hour pillars, and so different charts. Without a time of birth the chart has three pillars, six characters. Some practitioners read that shorter chart, and some try to estimate the hour, which is called rectification. A birth certificate, hospital record or family notes are the usual places to look.
Two other details are worth knowing. The month pillar follows solar terms, not calendar months, and the first month starts around 4 February, at the Start of Spring. The year pillar changes at that same point in BaZi, not at Lunar New Year, so a birthday in late January or early February needs care. And the day pillar comes from a continuous cycle of 60 days, so it cannot be worked out from the date alone without a table or software. That is exactly why so many people prefer a ready-made reading to doing the sums themselves.

Reading a chart is a pleasant exercise. It gives you a structure for thinking about your own habits, and for some people the symbolism is part of family tradition. It works best as a prompt for reflection: read it slowly, note the ideas that stand out and share your element with a friend. Nothing in that needs proof, and it is meant to be enjoyed.

How does the Eastern Astrology Language Reading give me a chart?

What are the four pillars in a Chinese chart?
They are the year, month, day and hour of your birth. Each pillar is a pair: one of 10 Heavenly Stems (an element with a yin or yang quality) over one of 12 Earthly Branches (the zodiac animals). Four pairs make eight characters, which is what the name BaZi means.
Why does the hour of birth matter?
The hour supplies the fourth pillar. The day is divided into twelve two-hour periods, each tied to one animal, so a different hour gives a different pillar and a different chart. Without it, practitioners have only three pillars to read.
What if I do not know my birth time?
You can look at a birth certificate, hospital record or family notes. If none exists, some practitioners work with the three known pillars, and some try to estimate the hour, which is called rectification. A chart without a confirmed time is simply less complete.
How do the five elements relate to each other?
In the generating cycle Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal and Metal cuts Wood.
Can I read my own chart?
You can learn the structure from books and free explainers, and many people enjoy that. The pillars depend on solar-term dates and a day-count cycle that are easy to get wrong by hand, so people often use a reference table, a practitioner or a ready-made reading.
Is the Eastern chart just for fun?
For most people it is a mix of culture, tradition and personal reflection. It is best enjoyed that way, as a mirror for your own thoughts rather than a substitute for professional advice.
