An Eastern astrology birth chart is the chart of eight characters, known as BaZi, that a practitioner builds from the moment you were born. To build one properly you need three facts: the date, the time and the place of your birth. This guide explains why each one matters, how a practitioner goes about reading the result and how a quick personal reading such as the Eastern Astrology Language Reading lets you see an Eastern chart in about a minute, starting with a free quiz.

The date. Your full day, month and year of birth set the year, month and day pillars. The year of birth also gives your zodiac animal, which is the part most people already know.
The time. The hour sets the fourth pillar. The day is split into twelve two-hour periods, each tied to one animal, so two people born on the same date but hours apart get different charts. Look for a birth certificate, a hospital record or notes your family kept. If you only know “around the evening”, a practitioner may be able to narrow it down.
The place. Birth place does two jobs. It fixes the time zone, and some practitioners use it to convert clock time into local solar time, which shifts with longitude and with daylight saving time. A birth in a distant part of a time zone can move the hour into a neighboring period. Not every reader makes this adjustment, so ask which method is used.
Why lunar and solar dates disagree
Many people assume the chart uses the Chinese lunar calendar, because the zodiac year changes at Lunar New Year. In fact BaZi runs on the sun. The months follow solar terms, with the first month starting around 4 February at the Start of Spring, and the year pillar changes at that same point. The day pillar comes from a continuous 60-day cycle that does not depend on the moon at all.
The result is that a birthday in January or early February can belong to one year by the lunar rule and to another by the BaZi rule. It also means that working out a chart by hand is error-prone. People normally use a printed table or software, and a practitioner checks it. For a plain explanation of the pillars themselves, see our guide to how a chart is laid out, and for the animals, our list of the 12 zodiac animals and how to find yours.
How a practitioner reads the chart
Methods vary between schools, but a typical reading follows a sequence like this:
- Build the four pillars. Work out the stem and branch for the year, month, day and hour.
- Find the Day Master. The stem of the day pillar is treated as the self, and the rest is read in relation to it.
- Count the elements. Tally Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water across the eight characters, including the elements hidden inside the branches.
- Judge the balance. Ask whether the Day Master looks strong or weak, and which elements would balance it.
- Add the cycles. Overlay the ten-year luck cycles and the element of the current year.
- Turn it into a story. The practitioner links all of this to areas of life such as work, family and money.
Steps 1 to 3 are a procedure, and two competent practitioners should agree on them. Steps 4 to 6 are the storytelling side of the tradition, and that is where schools and readers bring their own style.
A quick route to a personal chart
Not everyone has a birth certificate to hand, a practitioner on call and an afternoon to spare. That is where a ready-made reading helps. The Eastern Astrology Language Reading is a personal Eastern astrology reading built from your birth date and your answers to a 9-question quiz. The seller describes it as drawing on your zodiac animal and element, the BaZi “four pillars” idea and named “stars” such as the Wealth Star, the Peach Blossom Star and the Nobleman Star.

Questions people ask
What do I need for the Eastern Astrology Language Reading?
The Eastern Astrology Language Reading starts with a free 9-question quiz that asks for your first name, your email and your birth date, so you can have your first reading in about a minute. If you want the full chart, Essential ($19) and VIP ($47, against the seller's regular $97) deliver a 50+ page chart by email, with a 60-day money-back guarantee through ClickBank.
What details do I need for a BaZi birth chart?
Three: your full date of birth, your time of birth as exactly as you can find it, and your place of birth. The date and time build the four pillars. The place lets some practitioners adjust the clock time to local solar time.
Do I need my exact time of birth?
For a full chart, yes. The hour supplies the fourth pillar. Without it a chart has only three pillars, and the result is less complete. A birth certificate or hospital record is the usual source.
Does the place of birth matter?
It does for practitioners who convert clock time to true solar time, which depends on longitude, time zone and daylight saving at the time. For a rough reading it matters less than the date and hour.
Is my lunar birthday used?
Not directly. The year animal follows the Chinese lunar year, but BaZi months and the year pillar follow solar terms, with the year changing around 4 February. That is why lunar and solar dates can disagree.
What does a practitioner look for in the chart?
Usually the Day Master, the balance of the five elements across the eight characters, how the elements support or oppose each other, and ten-year luck cycles. It is a rich symbolic language that people enjoy exploring.
Is it safe to type my date of birth into an online quiz?
Use the same common sense as with any sign-up form. Enter only what is asked, and consider a separate email address if you like to keep sign-ups apart.
