Eye health supplements, reviewed with care

Independent reviews of eye health supplements, with plain notes on screen strain, everyday eye comfort and when to see an eye doctor.

If your eyes feel tired after a long day on a screen or with a book, you have probably noticed how many capsules promise to help. This category covers supplements sold to support eye health and everyday eye comfort, along with related eye-comfort products. It does not cover prescription treatments or eye care that comes from your own eye doctor.

A realistic place for eye supplements

Diet matters for the eyes. Leafy greens, colorful vegetables, eggs and fish supply nutrients that eye tissue uses, and some people are advised by their eye doctor to take a particular formula. Outside that kind of guidance, an eye supplement is at most one support for a healthy routine, and evidence varies by ingredient.

The bigger wins for most people are simple: regular eye exams, UV-blocking sunwear outdoors, not smoking, managing blood sugar and blood pressure, and taking breaks from close screen work. No capsule can change eyesight or take the place of an exam.

Dietary supplements are handled differently from medicines in the United States, and no brand is pre-approved for effectiveness. That is why we check each formula against published research ourselves. To see what we check before rating any product, read how we review products.

What a good eye health page says

A good eye health page describes support for a healthy routine. It does not promise to change your eyesight, replace surgery or prescribed treatment, or lean on frightening stories to rush you into buying. Clear wording matters because changes in how you see have many causes and some of them are urgent, so we prefer pages that skip vague promises.

Some eye formulas contain high doses of certain nutrients that are not right for everyone, including smokers and people on some medicines. Ask a pharmacist if you are unsure.

Changes that need a prompt eye exam

See an eye doctor promptly, or go to urgent care, for any sudden change in sight, a curtain or shadow across your view, a burst of new flashes of light, eye pain with redness, or double vision. Gradual changes, like trouble reading, needing more light or seeing straight lines as wavy, also need an exam. Adults should have regular eye checks even without symptoms, since some eye conditions cause none early on.
